What topics do we publish?

Think outside the box. Despite the name Migrant Times, it's not strictly about "migrants" per se. Our focus is Southeast Asia and the broader Asia-Pacific. We cover all things human mobility, labor rights, and policy, alongside the deeply human side: personal narratives, community life, displacement, and human rights. We also look at labor markets, policy, law, and how tech like AI is reshaping work. Feel free to browse the homepage to see it in context.

What formats do we publish?

Accepted Answer

Migrant Times writes in English. We're looking for strong features, commentary, analysis, or personal essays. If you're not a traditional writer but have a great story to tell, reach out anyway — our editors can work with you in an as-told-to format. As for images, we strongly recommend using original photos taken by you or imagery you have rights to use. Otherwise, feel free to source from platforms like Wikimedia Commons or Unsplash. All submitted articles are subject to editing and fact-checking, and it is your duty to ensure your submission is your original work. Please allow up to 5 business days for us to review your pitch. We welcome both individual ideas and co-authored pieces.

How many words?

Usually somewhere between 800 and 3,000 words, depending on what the story needs.

Do you pay?

Accepted Answer

Not right now, and we want to be completely transparent about why. We aren't here to push free labor or replace paid journalism. As an independent outlet, this space lets us cover grassroots stories we can't reach yet. If you're only looking for paid gigs, we totally get it. But if you want the mentorship and a platform to amplify an important story, we'd love to work together.

Do you accept simultaneous submissions?

Yes, that is fine by us. We understand you may be pitching elsewhere. All we ask is that you let us know upfront and update us immediately if your piece is accepted by another outlet.
